WHEN TUITION RISES, PROTEST BEGINS

PDFPrintE-mail

Written by Robert McKnight Friday, 12 November 2010 08:08

The UK government wants to raise the cost of tuition fees from about four thousand to nine thousand dollars to help the university come out of debt. 51,000 student protestors have been taken into custody. During their protest the students painted obscene objects all over the walls; they then proceeded with climbing onto the roof throwing things down. Outside the building fires were set, and firecrackers went off.  “Arrest were made for trespassing and criminal destruction” London’s Metropolitan police said.  There were about 8 people who suffered minor injuries. “We did not expect this level of violence,” said the commissioner. Defenders stated that the universities will not have to charge at maximum price, but other resources said they will. (Quote form

"It seems economically sensible for the universities to charge as much as they can. It may not happen immediately but in the medium term, most universities will charge the maximum," he concluded, adding that's what happened when the maximum was last increased four years ago"

Priscilla's Perspective: National Un-friend Day!

PDFPrintE-mail

Written by Administrator Friday, 05 November 2010 07:39

These days on Facebook your friends with anyone under the sun, remember when your Myspace had 50 of  your close personal friends and you felt like the coolest kid on the block? Well those days are over.

With cyber networking at its highest people are encouraged even rewarded for adding every random person who plays a social networking game to their profile to get maybe an extra chicken in farmville or 100 bonus points in mafia wars.

Well Jimmy Kimmel, host of Jimmy Kimmel live, has announced a national day to take that all back, "National Un-friend Day". On November 17th take a look at your friends list and consider some downsizing.

Do you really need to friend Bart Simpson, some may say yes, but William Shattner, Jimmy's supporter in the effort, urges you to reconsider.

I personally this November will take part in the self proclaimed "holiday" and renovate my friends list but with everything taken to account, I'm still keeping notable names like Chuck Norris on the list because everyone needs a little humor, but I'm sorry "random dude who's name I cant pronounce and only speaks Arabic meaning I never desire nor could communicate with" is gonna go.

This holiday even goes far enough to suggest you don't need everyone at your school, work, or sports team. Really guys, is it that important to know "that one guy in Algebra's" plans for the weekend?

Ex-Guerrilla to Be Brazil's First Female President

PDFPrintE-mail

Written by Laurie Bajo Friday, 05 November 2010 07:32

On Oct. 31, 2010 a former Marxist guerrilla who was tortured and imprisoned during Brazil's long dictatorship was elected Sunday as the first female president of Latin America's biggest nation, a country in the midst of a rapid economic and political rise.

A statement from the Supreme Electoral Court, which oversees elections, said governing party candidate Dilma Rousseff won the election.

With nearly all ballots counted, Rousseff had 56 percent of the vote compared to just under 44 percent for her centrist rival, Jose Serra, the electoral court said.

On Rousseff’s first 25 minute speech she said her first promise was to, “honor the women” and she hoped that her win would allow, “fathers and mothers to look their daughters in the eyes and say, ‘Yes, a woman can.’”

Beginning Jan. 1, she will lead a nation on the rise, a country that will host the 2014 World Cup and that is expected to be the globe's fifth-largest economy by the time it hosts the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Despite Rousseff's win, many voters don't want "Lula," as he is popularly known, to go away. "If Lula ran for president 10 times, I would vote for him 10 times," said Marisa Santos, a 43-year-old selling her homemade jewelry on a Sao Paulo street. "I'm voting for Dilma, of course, but the truth is it will still be Lula who will lead us."

"We've been waiting for this dream for so long," said Sandra Martins, a 40-year-old school teacher who was dressed in Worker Party red and waving a large Rousseff campaign flag. "It's going to be the third term for Lula - except this time represented by a woman."

"I voted for Dilma because she is a fighter," said Estevam Sanches, a 43-year-old pizza parlor owner in Sao Paulo. "What we need is a fighter in the presidency to continue, as she says she will, with Lula's efforts to eradicate poverty and strengthen the economy."

Dilma is the daughter of a Bulgarian immigrant father, a lawyer who died when she was 14, and a Brazilian mother who was a schoolteacher. Her past points to an early political awakening. In 1967, as a 19-year-old economics student, she joined a militant political group opposing the dictatorship. For three years she helped lead guerrilla organizations, instructed comrades on Marxist theory and wrote for an underground newspaper.

After being released, she moved to southern Brazil in 1973, where she reunited with her now ex-husband, Carlos Araujo, who was also an imprisoned militant. She gave birth to a daughter and finished an economics degree. As Brazil's dictatorship began to loosen its grip, Rousseff became more politically involved and campaigned to get her husband elected to the state congress in 1982.

"We fought and participated in a dream to build a better Brazil," she said in an interview published in the newspaper Folha de S. Paulo in 2005, one of the rare times she has spoken in detail about her militancy and torture endured."

High school gets an elementary lesson?

PDFPrintE-mail

Written by Priscilla Clock Friday, 05 November 2010 07:19

Many things have changed this year with the construction going on and the new faces in the halls but one such change isnt't as pleasant for some as much as others. The elementary art room has been expanded and their funding has been raised.

This room is now over twice the High school's and they can afford to buy things like pottery wheels for first through fifth graders. The entire room itself  is also brand new.

On the other hand, the high school's art room is in for some downsizing.

Mrs. Kinney's already small room is said to be moved into an even smaller room with less storage and her already limited funding has taken a back burner to the district"s sending all the money she needs for art supplies to the elementary to cover the cost of their renovations.

She has admitted to having to buy everyday supplies like plaster and clay. If your child someday grows up to be a famous potter because of his or her 2nd grade art class more power to you, but students in high school trying to get scholarships through art is a lot more likely, and  now a lot more difficult.

KHS Cheerleaders with “A totally new look”

PDFPrintE-mail

Written by Robert McKnight Wednesday, 03 November 2010 07:07

From the start of the year the students of Keene High School had their doubts on cheerleading this year, but former gymnast, coach, and now science teacher Kailah Ramsey was sure to win them back.

Coach Z (Ramsey) has coached for about ten years now from basket ball to gymnastics. She believes that all of the potential cheerleaders are very dedicated. They arrive to school at six thirty in the morning, and proceed with school at eight. She wants to applaud all the ones that are in extra curricular activities after school and the ones who work. When I asked her how she felt about this years cheerleaders? She responded with, “I think that we are going to have a great year! They all work strong together and we have a strong community.”

They have not had tryouts yet, but this year there is three possible returning, and twenty seven potential cheerleaders. This year we will be seeing some street moves and

Dancing, with a little bit of stunting, and a lot of tumbling. The cheerleaders have told coach Z that they are a new team with a “totally new look”. Coach Z is looking forward to a great year.
